Modeling Dynamic Data Center Loads

 

Large data center clusters introduce dynamic and complex load characteristics that can materially influence grid stability. Accurate modeling is critical to preventing overly conservative interconnection requirements while protecting system reliability.

Transient & Voltage Stability

 

Evaluate voltage and frequency response/stability under load fluctuations and disturbances associated with AI-driven data centers. We assess fast load ramps, power swings, and fault events to confirm acceptable voltage recovery and frequency behavior at the point of interconnection, and to identify mitigation options such as BESS control tuning and reactive support.

  • Assess power exchange with the grid using co-located generation under AI workloads.
  • Identify constraints, operating boundaries, and design limits.

Sub-synchronous Oscillation Analysis and Torsional Impact

 

Assess AI load variability impacts on stability and nearby generators by evaluating how rapid load swings and repetitive power fluctuations interact with generator controls and mechanical torque. This helps identify risks such as sub-synchronous interactions and oscillations, and informs mitigation options such as control tuning, filtering, or operational limits.

Load Behavior Ride-Through and Return

 

Industry events have shown approximately 1500 MW of data center load tripping after 230 kV faults, with delayed load return driven by UPS systems. Proactive modeling mitigates these risks.

Evaluate ride-through performance for grid disturbances and faults to confirm the data center remains online through voltage and frequency excursions without unnecessary tripping. We analyze credible fault events and recovery sequences against applicable utility/ITIC limits and identify mitigation options such as BESS support and staged load recovery.

Designing for Reliability

 

Danovo Energy Solutions performs Reliability, Availability, and Maintainability (RAM) analyses to define uptime expectations for data centers and translate them into power-system design requirements. In addition to behind-the-meter assets, we evaluate upstream grid events (faults, outages, reclosing, and switching) and their impact on facility operations to inform redundancy targets, design upgrades, protection/control strategies, and other mitigation measures.
