As utilities face new challenges, there is growing interest in how data analytics can provide new insights into emerging issues and solutions. A good program should include several items to significantly improve the success of an analytics program for a cross-functional team. These include: (i) power system training for data scientists and programmers, (ii) synthetic data generation using a Distribution Grid Digital Twin to help data analysts, AMI specialists, and power engineers validate and demonstrate use cases, and (iii) collaboration on analytics applications.
To support this training need, we have developed a training guide on Power System Fundamentals. The guide is intended as an introduction to power systems for data analysts, programmers, or other non-power engineer professionals.
The first three chapters provide a basic overview of single-phase and polyphase power system concepts. Subsequent chapters address various data sources for analytics, including smart meters, synchronized measurements, power quality meters, and management systems.
Each chapter includes problems designed to help readers gain familiarity with various power system concepts and calculations. This guide is not intended to be an exhaustive overview but rather a foundation for understanding key concepts, exploring additional references, and, most importantly, enabling effective interaction with power engineers.
