Advisor – IEC 61850 SME

POSITION OVERVIEW

We have a need for an IEC 61850 subject matter expert (SME) with experience in system design, testing, standards, and field support. Typical projects including working with clients to develop IEC 61850 conceptual design and design standards, providing training on IEC 61850 and digital substations, validation testing of IEC 61850 systems using Real Time Digital Simulation (RTDS) with hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testing, and possible field support during IEC 61850 system commissioning and testing.

 

The IEC 61850 SME will work closely with Danovo Energy Solutions’ team of industry-leading advisors, technical experts, and leadership as they provide consulting services to our customers in the power industry. The opportunity exists to be a team manager or team member.

This is a critical position within Danovo Energy Solutions and is reserved for people with the passion to create insights, foster teamwork, and work with utilities on innovative solutions. The position will be customer-facing for project execution as well as business development.

 

Key Responsibilities

Practice Development / Expansion:

  • Support and lead projects on IEC 61850 protection and control applications.

 

Customer Focus:

  • Collaborate with utilities and team members in solving technical operating problems to meet the needs of utility.
  • Develop business case support for clients justifying digital substation.
  • Interface with utilities, government research organizations, and other clients.

 

Team Focus & Project Management:

  • Develop solutions collaboratively with adjacent projects and teams working in related technical or business areas.
  • Be a team player promoting the overall business advancement of Danovo Energy Solutions
  • Conceive and structure new projects, with a distribution of work across a team.
  • Write technical reports of project results with excellent organization and composition.
  • Write, pursue, and close proposals.

 

Industry Participation & Recognition:

  • Promote Danovo Energy Solutions’ expertise and experience in the power system protection and control area.
  • Participate in related industry standards development and technical forums, both for technical contribution and learning and for the development of relationships to help the Danovo business and develop new project work.
  • Keep abreast of related technical developments.
    Write and present technical papers and industry materials.

 

Required QUALIFICATIONS

Education & Experience

  • Leadership and Technical expertise in the utility industry as demonstrated by previous experience, projects, involvement in technical societies, and/or patents.
  • Degree in Engineering or another relevant technical field
  • 8+ years of experience with Electrical Power Systems

 

Systems & Skills

  • In-depth knowledge of IEC 61850 technology, architecture, applications, testing tools, and field deployments, including Ethernet networking.
  • Experience in Power System Protection including setting process and tools (AcSELerator, EnerVista UR or similar)
  • Experience with protection device testing, safety procedures, and tools
  • Knowledge of the basics of substation design and substation operations.
  • Practical knowledge or experience with real-time digital simulators (RTDS, Opal-RT, Typhoon).
  • Detail oriented engineering and interpersonal skills
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work in a diverse and inclusive space
  • Ability to work with the dynamics of a fast-paced team
  • Proficient in business software like Microsoft Office (Excel, Visio, Word, PowerPoint, Etc.)

 

Preferred Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Advanced degree in Engineering or another relevant technical field
  • Active member of IEEE, industry groups, etc.

 

Location

Danovo Energy Solutions has offices in Raleigh, North Carolina; Markham, Ontario; Lombard, Illinois; and San Clemente, California. We offer hybrid employment that supports a blend of in-office and/or remote work.
