Senior Advisor – Team Lead
POSITION OVERVIEW
This position will lead a technical team that builds models, performs system studies, and verifies design with the use of hardware-in-the-loop testing of P&C systems in the laboratory environment for distributed energy solutions and microgrids. The successful candidate will be accountable for conceptual and primary design, modeling, analysis, and laboratory testing of Distributed Energy Systems including microgrids, energy storage-based systems for non-wire alternatives, captive power plants, and grid automation applications. The candidate should have 10+ years of experience and in-depth knowledge of Protection and Control (P&C) systems, distributed control systems, distribution automation, and system interconnections in the areas of renewable energy systems and microgrids. The position requires verifying the results of system analysis and evaluating the design based on studies.
Key Responsibilities
- Familiarity with transmission, distribution, and smart grid standards (IEEE Std. 1547, 2030 series, P2800, etc.) and electric system codes.
- Familiarity with communication protocols and architectures in the electric power industry (specifically, IEC61850, etc.) is preferred.
- Familiarity with one or more programming languages (Python, C++, etc.) and/or IEC 61131-3 programming standards is an asset.
- Customer-focused; open to accept new challenges and share ideas.
- Knowledge of field experience with system commissioning and testing.
- Contribute quality technical content to projects in an efficient and timely manner.
- Provide and further develop Project Management skills.
- Start developing contacts to generate projects.

Required QUALIFICATIONS
Business Development Responsibilities
Business Development responsibilities include identifying and helping to develop strategic revenue-generating relationships with existing or potential customers. After an initial adjustment period, Senior Advisors typically will perform Business Development activities assisting others in this area. Achievement of Business Development activities which result in being able to support oneself in billable work. The ability to support additional staff in billable work will improve one’s assent within this position’s pay range. However, Senior Advisors with strong technical skills who do not perform any level of Business Development activity may only ascend to the mid-level of this position’s pay range.
Education & Experience
- Master’s degree in electrical engineering or a relevant technical field
- Technical expertise in at least one area of the utility industry as demonstrated by previous project experience or peer-reviewed publications, leadership in technical societies, and/or patents.
- 10 years of experience and demonstrated success in technical leadership.
- 10 years of experience in the design, study, and analysis of North American electric power systems
Systems & Skills
- Working experience with power systems software tools such as PSCAD/EMTDC, EMTP-RV, RSCAD, CYMDIST, SynerGi, and ASPEN for modeling and impact assessment.
- In-depth knowledge and involvement in power system studies – transient, dynamic, and steady-state
- Strong understanding of power system phenomena and contingencies in transmission & distribution systems
- Ethical and professional business manner in interactions with team members and customers
- Strong communication skills including technical writing and presentations.
- Technical skills to execute projects, identify opportunities, and write proposals.
- Ability to work in a diverse and inclusive space.
- Ability to work in a team dynamic
Preferred Qualifications
Education & Experience
- Professional Engineer (P.E./P.Eng.)
- PhD in Electrical Engineering or a relevant technical field
- Field experience with system commissioning and testing

Working conditions are normal for a professional office environment. When working in a field or laboratory environment, protective personal equipment or additional safety training may be required. The role may require the ability to lift and carry equipment up to 50 pounds, stand for extended periods, and work in various weather conditions. The ability to sit, stand, kneel, and bend is required. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
