POSITION OVERVIEW
The Practice Area Manager is a key member of the Distribution Planning and Studies Business Area leadership team at Danovo Energy Solutions. Reporting to the VP of Distribution Planning & Studies, this position leads the Reliability & Resiliency practice area (PA) and shares responsibility for the practice area’s financial performance including partial P&L accountability. The primary role is to provide business and team leadership, lead initiatives by applying technical knowledge of utility-focused reliability and resiliency studies, distribution automation, protective device optimization, asset performance, contingency analysis, storm hardening, emergency preparedness risk analytics, real-time reliability monitoring assessments, business continuity, and regulatory compliance while collaborating across engineering, operations, maintenance, cybersecurity, and executive leadership.
Serving as a trusted advisor to customers, the Practice Area Manager builds and maintains strong customer relationships, identifies strategic growth opportunities, and represents Danovo Energy Solutions within the industry. The role also partners closely with Quanta Services and its operating companies to expand capabilities, develop integrated solutions, and deliver exceptional value to customers.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Technical Leadership
- Lead the successful delivery of complex utility reliability and resiliency engineering programs end-to-end from strategy through implementation, ensuring high-quality outcomes, adoption, and measurable value.
- Own and drive the growth of the practice area through solution development, design, estimates, proposals, and client relationship leadership.
- Establish, approve and maintain engineering study methodologies, modeling standards, assumptions, and acceptance criteria to ensure consistent, defensible, and auditable results across client projects and regions.
- Lead the development of digital engineering capabilities by leveraging programming languages such as Python, C#, SQL, and other modern technologies to automate engineering workflows, improve data quality, and accelerate study execution.
- Oversee reliability studies including SAIDI/SAIFI/CEMI analysis, reliability design criteria reviews, N-1/N-2 contingency analyses, and protective device coordination, placement and optimization.
- Lead distribution automation work, including FLISR design and roadmap, self-healing grid design, adaptive protection schemes, and recloser/sectionalizing coordination.
- Direct resiliency planning initiatives, including infrastructure vulnerability risk assessments and storm hardening/resiliency evaluations for critical infrastructure and high-risk areas.
- Provide technical oversight for third-party reliability assessments and ensure compliance with applicable industry standards and regulatory requirements (e.g., NERC TOP-010, state reliability standards, utility planning and interconnection standards).
- Ensure alignment between reliability planning models and operational technologies including OMS, SCADA, GIS, ADMS/DMS and DERMS and coordinate with operations and distribution automation teams to support integrated planning and operational decision-making.
- Drive the development and adoption of advanced analytics, machine learning, and AI-enabled engineering tools to improve productivity, enhance analytical capability, and expand the scalability of reliability and resiliency service offerings.
- Represent Danovo professionally with customers, partners, and industry groups.
Team & Delivery Leadership
- Build, manage, and develop high-performing teams by establishing clear goals and expectations, providing ongoing coaching, mentorship and professional development opportunities.
- Ensure projects are delivered on time, on scope, and on budget, with a strong focus on quality and customer satisfaction while proactively managing project risks and issues.
- Oversee resource planning, utilization, and sustainable workloads across a large and technically diverse team.
- Foster accountability, transparency, and collaboration across teams, including cross-functional coordination with other practice areas.
- Establish, implement, enforce, and continuously improve QA/QC processes for study deliverables, including engineering standards, peer review protocols, model validation, and deliverable governance to ensure consistent, accurate and defensible work products.
Business Development
- Work directly with customers on delivery and new project acquisition.
- Promote and deepen Danovo’s reliability and resiliency service offerings within the utility industry.
- Support cross-practice collaboration and provide strategic input on connected initiatives.
- Leverage existing contacts or create new ones to generate projects.
- Collaborate with leaders across practice areas to develop integrated solutions, pursue strategic opportunities, and deliver services to clients.
- Represent the company at industry events and forums (e.g., IEEE PES, CIGRE, utility working groups).
- Stay informed on market, regulatory, and technology trends and share insights internally.
Strategy & Growth
- Build and execute practice-area strategy and growth plans, including expanding AI-driven reliability analytics capabilities.
- Support succession planning and identify high-potential talent.
- Make decisions that support long-term business growth and align with company vision.
- Establish and maintain strategic partnerships with technology vendors and tool developers to advance solution capabilities, accelerate innovation, support training, demos, and scalable frameworks.
- Stay current on industry and technology trends, including emerging utility standards, storm hardening practices, and advancing AI/ML applications in power engineering.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
TRAVEL
The ideal candidate is willing and able to travel to client locations and industry meetings, typically up to 25% depending on the assignment.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor’s degree required in Engineering or related technical field.
- Advanced degree in Engineering or related technical field preferred.
- 10+ years in the utility industry focusing on Distribution systems.
- Demonstrated experience leading large, multi-disciplinary reliability or resiliency programs for major investor-owned utilities.
Skills & Systems
- Distribution reliability tools: hands-on experience with industry modeling tools (examples: CYME, Synergi/ISP, OpenDSS, or equivalent) and the ability to evaluate and approve model outputs and automation scripts.
- Protective device analysis: proficiency in recloser/fuse/sectionalizer coordination, FLISR design, and distribution automation schemes.
- Reliability metrics and associated IEEE standards: deep familiarity with SAIDI, SAIFI, CAIDI, CEMI, and related indices used by utilities and regulators for performance measurement and reporting.
- Operational systems integration: familiarity with OMS/SCADA/GIS/DMS and the implications of operational telemetry and control on reliability planning models.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Power systems fundamentals: deep knowledge of distribution system theory including protection coordination, distribution automation, voltage regulation, and load transfer analysis under N-1/N-2 conditions.
- Client management experience on complex projects with 4–6+ years in the electric power and energy consulting industry, including experience with people management.
- Ability to apply modern AI and machine learning tools to improve productivity, solution quality, and scalability of engineering workflows.
- Experience with catastrophic risk assessment, storm hardening evaluation, and resiliency frameworks for critical infrastructure.
- Familiarity with NERC reliability standards (e.g., TOP-010), state regulatory reliability requirements, and utility tariff structures.
- Proven success in financial management, business development, and organizational leadership.
- Solid understanding of the utility industry and power/energy markets.
- Strong communication, conflict management, and collaboration skills.
LOCATION
Danovo Energy Solutions has offices in Raleigh, NC, Markham, ON, Lombard, IL, and San Clemente, CA. The preferred location for this role is the Raleigh, NC or the San Clemente, CA office. We offer hybrid employment that supports a blend of in-office and/or remote work.
